Qatar celebrates its National Day on Thursday 18th December 2014. Qatar Museums wishes all nationals and expatriates an enjoyable National Day!
Qatar’s Heritage
National Day is a national commemoration of the nation state’s unification and independence in 1878 when Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani rallied the tribes of the peninsula into a unified people. On this occassion, we want to show our appreciation of Qatar’s heritage, and to encourage pride among Qataris and Qatar’s residents.
There are so many activities going on around the city during the holiday, and we have a few suggestions of our own below.
Personal collections at Mal Lawal
Opening on Monday 15th December just before National Day, Mal Lawal is a uniquely local exhibition that reflects on the personal collections of collectors across Qatar and the GCC. Come and explore collectors’ displays of their rare collections in a spectacular setting, depicting the past, present and future of Qatar, on the occassion of National Day.
Contemporary Qatari Artists
We’re showcasing contemporary Qatari artists at two different exhibitions this month. Come and see Yousef Ahmad’s artistic journey at QM Gallery Katara and other artists at the Huna Hunak exhibition at Al Riwaq during the National Day period.
Across Doha
Elsewhere across Qatar, events and activities are planned from as early as 8th December. The spectacular corniche fireworks display is not to be missed on the night of the 18th, but there are plenty of other events to take part in. They include Al Izba, camel taming and camel shows at Darb Al Saai; narine arts displays; and daily events at Souq Waqif.
