Moynaq, Uzbekistan – <\/strong>The sun was setting\u00a0over\u00a0the ship graveyard in the town of Moynaq, Uzbekistan<\/a>, when electronic music\u00a0began thrumming through the air.<\/span><\/p>\n

The warm, salty desert wind carried the sounds across the\u00a0flat landscape, some 1,200 kilometres from the country’s capital, to the delight of thousands of spectators.<\/p>\n

Friday, September 14\u00a0made history not only\u00a0for the 13,500 local residents but\u00a0also for Uzbekistan’s young generation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first electronic music festival in\u00a0the country\u00a0and the first music festival in\u00a0Moynaq\u00a0was\u00a0an event\u00a0many people had\u00a0been waiting for.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Uzbekistan was until recently one of the world’s most isolated countries. Under President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, it\u00a0has been gradually opening up.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Stihia\u00a0festival,\u00a0with avant-garde sounds and ambient techno played by DJs from Berlin, Georgia, Russia and Uzbekistan,\u00a0was part\u00a0of the new\u00a0vision.<\/p>\n

The location was not accidental.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The ship graveyard, littered with the skeletons of vessels rusting away in the sand, is what\u00a0remains of\u00a0the mighty Aral Sea.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is a monument to one of the worst man-made environmental disasters.<\/p>\n

The festival organisers wanted to raise awareness of the desiccation of the Aral and call for a\u00a0more responsible approach in the notoriously water-hungry\u00a0region.<\/p>\n

Some attendees even believed the music might have a magical touch, hoping that perhaps techno beats and good energy could encourage\u00a0the sea\u2019s revitalisation.<\/p>\n

Back in the 1960s, the Aral\u00a0Sea fell\u00a0victim to\u00a0Soviet engineering projects.<\/p>\n

Amu\u00a0Daria\u00a0and\u00a0Syr\u00a0Daria, two rivers that once flowed into the sea, were diverted to support the USSR’s growing cotton industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a01954, Turkmenistan launched the construction of the\u00a0Karakum\u00a0Canal\u00a0bringing\u00a0water\u00a0from the\u00a0top of the Amu Daria river,\u00a0across the\u00a0Karakum\u00a0Desert, to\u00a0cotton fields\u00a0and taps in the\u00a0parched\u00a0capital of Ashkhabad.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Growing cotton,\u00a0making textiles and growing wheat\u00a0were more profitable\u00a0than fish. So they did\u00a0a\u00a0trade-off,” Michael H Glantz, director of the Consortium for Capacity Building at the University of Colorado, and a long-time activist to save the Aral, told Al Jazeera. “The water sits there and evaporates anyway. So why not use\u00a0it\u00a0and build new canals,\u00a0so that\u00a0the water goes to the desert, which lacks water but is otherwise a productive soil?”<\/p>\n

In Soviet times, the relationship between Moscow and the Central Asian republics\u00a0had a\u00a0colonial dynamic, where the peripheries’\u00a0scarce resources boosted the\u00a0centre’s\u00a0economic might.<\/p>\n

“Do we care about some fish and fishing industry or\u00a0do\u00a0we want to feed the textile industry\u00a0in Russia?”\u00a0said Glantz. “The cotton used to go to factories in Moscow and other places on export, so it was a money maker. But the money didn’t go to the Uzbeks or Turkmen”.<\/p>\n

As a result, Moynaq,\u00a0a thriving port and one of the most important fishing industry\u00a0towns\u00a0in the former Soviet Union, sank\u00a0into oblivion.<\/p>\n

By the mid-1990s, the coastline retreated over 100 kilometres and the sea lost three-quarters of its water. Soon after,\u00a0all the fish died.<\/p>\n

The Aral Sea disaster destroyed the town’s main source of employment, which resulted in high outward migration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the fish factory finally closed\u00a0down\u00a0in 1998, its employees were processing imported fish.<\/p>\n

Today,\u00a0the ship graveyard,\u00a0where local boys\u00a0hang out,\u00a0is\u00a0the last reminder of the town’s lost identity.<\/p>\n

The sea’s decay also had environmental consequences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The runoff from the cotton fields left the ground waters in\u00a0Moynaq contaminated with chemicals, pesticides and fertilisers, which affected the local population’s health.<\/p>\n

The area turned into a salt desert where dust storms rage for\u00a0over\u00a0<\/span>90 days a year, spreading poisonous salts.<\/p>\n

“During the perestroika time, the Aral Sea catastrophe was seen\u00a0as\u00a0analogous\u00a0with\u00a0Chernobyl,\u00a0since both radioactive substances from Chernobyl and blown-away sands\u00a0from the bottom of the dried-up Aral Sea\u00a0could be found all over\u00a0the\u00a0Eurasian Continent,”\u00a0Tetsuro\u00a0Chida, associate professor from the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n

“The Soviet\u00a0scholars and authorities\u00a0had foreseen the shrinkage of the Aral Sea when they took\u00a0developmental measures in the basin,\u00a0but they did not know what would happen as a result of its diminishment,” Chida said.<\/p>\n

Muhabbad, a 35-year-old resident of\u00a0Moynaq,\u00a0says the effects\u00a0of the sea’s decay\u00a0are\u00a0felt daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“The weather\u00a0is\u00a0getting worse\u00a0every year. The water is\u00a0salty and\u00a0undrinkable\u00a0and we\u00a0are suffering from various\u00a0health issues,” she told Al Jazeera.\u00a0“Oncological\u00a0diseases have become way too common.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

She attended the music festival with her 15-year-old niece Sabrina.\u00a0<\/span>While they enjoyed themselves, Muhabbad said the future\u00a0of\u00a0Moynaq\u00a0is unclear.<\/p>\n

“We would like other countries to help us\u00a0to address\u00a0our problems.\u00a0But I don’t know if it can happen.\u00a0I’m 35 and\u00a0I have never seen the Aral Sea,” she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It’s like with climate change. No one wants to give up on fossil fuels or coal. And the same is with the Aral – no one wants to give up water. So who is going to make the sacrifice?<\/p>\n

For those who came from Tashkent, the capital, the event provided a reason for many to visit a faraway corner of the country and take a closer look at the effects of the environmental catastrophe.<\/p>\n

“The people who\u00a0listen to electronic music and who\u00a0came from Tashkent and Samarkand\u00a0are young professionals. They\u00a0read a lot and their voice is important,” said\u00a0Anna, a journalist from the capital, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n

“It’s clear that we cannot change the situation, but we can draw some lessons from\u00a0the catastrophe. We understand that the misuse of\u00a0resources\u00a0had\u00a0caused\u00a0a global problem.\u00a0We have to learn from the past\u00a0to avoid\u00a0the same\u00a0mistakes in the future.”<\/p>\n

At present, both the UNDP and the Uzbek government are\u00a0trying to address\u00a0the\u00a0effects\u00a0the ecological disaster has had on local populations.<\/p>\n

Their efforts\u00a0focus on\u00a0improving\u00a0people’s\u00a0health,\u00a0education and\u00a0environmental security,\u00a0promoting entrepreneurship and\u00a0developing local\u00a0infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Thanks to a dam built between the northern and southern parts of the sea, Kazakhstan managed to save its own part of the Aral<\/a>. \u00a0That dam, however, has disrupted the flow of water into Uzbekistan.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is little hope that the Aral Sea will return to\u00a0Moynaq.<\/p>\n

“The Uzbeks, the Turkmen, the Kazakhs and then the Tajiks\u00a0would all\u00a0have to agree to give up water\u00a0for irrigation of cotton, wheat, rice and just let it\u00a0flow\u00a0to the sea.\u00a0It would take decades of sacrifice to refill\u00a0it,” the University of Colorado’s Glantz\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

“It’s like with\u00a0climate change. No one wants to give up on fossil fuels or coal. And the same is with the Aral – no one wants to give up water.
