Velika Kladusa, Bosnia –\u00a0<\/strong>Broken phones and broken bones: these are the risks refugees are running in Bosnia as they attempt to cross over the border into Croatia<\/a>,\u00a0the EU’s newest member state.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a warehouse near the town of Velika Kladusa, close to the Croatian border, most\u00a0of the 200 people living\u00a0here are trying to play\u00a0“the game”, a term many use for the attempt to reach Europe. It is a game\u00a0with high stakes and risks as a group of Iranian men living\u00a0here\u00a0well\u00a0know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Seven\u00a0men\u00a0are recovering from a beating, which they say happened the previous night. They say it was at the hands of Croatian police.<\/span><\/p>\n

They spread out their phones in a\u00a0line;\u00a0the\u00a0screens have all been smashed. One man winces as he pushes himself up to lift up his shirt. “Holy s***,” says\u00a0Arash,\u00a0one of the older\u00a0Iranians who was not with them the night before and is seeing the injuries for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n

“They put them in the car one by one and were beating them really hard. They used sticks to beat them. They\u00a0also kicked and punched them,”\u00a0Arash\u00a0says, translating.<\/span><\/p>\n

Farhad,\u00a0another Iranian\u00a0member of the group, adds: “They said,\u00a0‘If you come back again I’ll\u00a0kill you’.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Croatia’s Interior Ministry has dismissed allegations of police brutality.<\/span><\/p>\n

Representatives from Doctors Without Borders (known by its French initials MSF) were unable to confirm that\u00a0it was Croatian\u00a0police who beat those trying to cross the border, but\u00a0told Al Jazeera that the\u00a0injuries are consistent with the allegations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“We also regularly see patients with injuries varying from soft tissue injuries to sometimes fractures\u00a0which\u00a0are allegedly inflicted by Croatian border forces. These injuries are consistent with exposure to force on the specific body part and it is therefore possible that these wounds are inflicted as testified by our patients,” says Julian Koeberer,\u00a0a humanitarian affairs officer with\u00a0MSF.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year,\u00a0Bosnia has seen\u00a0a surge of refugees\u00a0and migrants\u00a0passing through the country. According to data collected by UNHCR, there\u00a0were 7,600\u00a0arrivals in Bosnia and Herzegovina from the beginning of the year until June, compared to\u00a0a total of\u00a0218 in 2017.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A short drive from the warehouse,\u00a0around\u00a0200 people\u00a0are\u00a0living in a field\u00a0next to the local dog shelter.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Stray dogs and puppies roam around\u00a0the field. Some people say they have sometimes come back to their tent to find a dog inside.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s because we are like dogs, that’s what they think,” says\u00a0Dalir,\u00a0a Pakistani.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most here keep playing\u00a0“the game”\u00a0even though they keep losing.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Three times we were pushed back by police, they beat us and broke our mobiles\u00a0and took a little bit of money,”\u00a0says Hussein who is also from Pakistan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The bruises and the beatings\u00a0will not deter them though,\u00a0they say they\u00a0will try again “maybe tomorrow”.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conditions in the field are poor and\u00a0MSF, which\u00a0works in the area,\u00a0treats\u00a0people from a\u00a0<\/span>mobile clinic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Doctors and volunteers say\u00a0that scabies and lice are common due to poor living conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But their most pressing concern is the weather.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Winter is coming,\u00a0temperatures are already dipping below zero at night and snow has fallen.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Living conditions for most migrants in Bosnia remain horrific,”\u00a0says MSF’s Koeberer,\u00a0“most patients coming to our mobile clinic suffer from skin diseases caused by poor hygiene conditions and from respiratory infections due to cold weather and are unable to recover while remaining outside exposed to harsh weather.<\/span><\/p>\n

“During the last weeks, our team already treated an increasing number of patients but with temperatures soon falling below five degrees and further at night \u2026 we expect severe cases of hypothermia and frostbite,\u00a0with people’s lives at risk if not provided with safe shelter.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The arrival of snow is worrying for all those on the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s zero degrees now, you have to rely on others to distribute food. As you can imagine, it’s not good for your mental health,”\u00a0says Marc who works with\u00a0No Name Kitchen,\u00a0an organisation which provides showers\u00a0for those living in the field\u00a0in Velika Kladusa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He adds that the constant pushback from Croatian police have a significant effect upon those\u00a0living here.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Maybe half of the time they are beaten up,\u00a0their\u00a0money is stolen, their phones are\u00a0broken.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bosnian people are good \u2026 but the camp conditions are very bad.<\/p>\n

Ali, Pakistani refugee<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Near the town of Bihac, also close to the Croatian border,\u00a0is the previously abandoned Borici dormitory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The dormitory was built in the fifties and intended for war orphans; now around 1,000 migrants\u00a0live\u00a0here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Men\u00a0cook chapatis outside around a fire. According to\u00a0the International Organization for Migration,\u00a0the building is steadily being prepared for winter,\u00a0but conditions inside are bleak.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is dark, hard to walk through without tripping up\u00a0and has the feeling of a squatter camp rather than an official facility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“The\u00a0Bosnian\u00a0people are good \u2026 but the camp conditions are very bad,”\u00a0says Ali from Pakistan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He points to a dark cavern under the dormitory to show where he sleeps at night.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“They don’t have water to wash their face,” he says of people living there, “it’s very cold here.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of the men express gratitude towards Bosnians and the Bosnian police who they contrast strongly with their Croatian counterparts across the border.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But snow and broken\u00a0bones\u00a0will not deter most from attempting to seek safety and economic stability.<\/span><\/p>\n

Faisal, who comes from Pakistan and is living in the dormitory, rubs his hands\u00a0together and coughs in the cold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“I will always try to cross again,” he says.<\/span><\/p>\n
